National Girl and Woman in Sports Day

Tomorrow, we commemorate National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) for the progress in women’s representation and the continuous work in athletics. There are many strong, powerful women who've made their mark in the history of sports; however, there is one woman who galvanized the world with charm and skill that made it what it is. Her name is Flo Hyman.

Flo Hyman, AKA the Flying Clutchman, was born in Inglewood, Los Angeles, where she discovered her passion for volleyball at Morningside High School. She went on to win various All-American and Most Valuable Player awards at the University of Houston and with the USA Volleyball Association. Flo eventually played in the 1984 Indoor Volleyball Olympics, winning silver! Aside from her skill, she is remembered as an avid advocate for women’s representation and empowerment in sports. After Flo’s untimely passing, President Ronald Reagan signed 1987 National Girls and Women in Sports Day into history in remembrance of her work's impact on sports. NGWSD occurred 15 years after Title IX legislation was passed, requiring equal access to all federally funded sports regardless of gender.

Today, women in sports are paving new roads from the one Flo carved. Simone Biles, the greatest gymnast of all time, shook the world by prioritizing the most precious gold of all time - her mental health. Carli Lloyd made history by being the highest U.S. Women's goal scorer in history. Momiji Nishiya, Japanese skateboarder, won gold in the first-ever Women's Street Skateboarding competition at 13 years old! They all prove women can do anything they want and excel with hard work and passion.
